Grenada. You’ve heard of it, right?

Hello friends,

As I progress through life I find that I can appreciate things like never before. Last week, I took a trip to Grenada and while doing a little exploring, I stopped to have my buddy Nolan take this picture of me in front of a memorial wall that was left standing near St. Georges:

I say “Memorial Wall” but certainly this is just an informal statement from the locals…there is an official memorial near the airport, but I found this much more “real” and less-well-known. In fact, I’ve never seen a picture of this wall before.

It’s not much to look at until you understand the importance of what’s here, Operation Urgent Fury was a 1983 United States–led invasion of Grenada:

1. The 82nd Airborne logo. These paratroopers along with U.S. Marines, U.S. Army Delta Force, and U.S. Navy SEALs and other combined forces constituted the 7,600 troops from the United States, Jamaica, and members of the Regional Security System that defeated the Grenadian resistance.

2. Behind me, it says “K.G.B. Behave!”

3. “Thank you USA for liberating us” is a direct reflection of how the locals feel. I spoke to a few Grenadians that were in the country in 1983 as they were ordered to stay indoors and out of harms way. I bluntly asked “how to you feel about Americans?” All unanimously agreed that we are friends!

As we explored the island and learned more about the Grenadian culture, I was intrigued and excited to know more. So much in fact I can see myself spending more time there hiking, camping and fitting in with the locals as much as possible. Until recently, I never thought that I’d “care” so much about the place…but after being there and the awesome feeling that I have about the country now that I’m back home is hard to deny.

I’d go back soon if it wasn’t for the 4 flights and red-eye travel😉 Maybe I will go again someday.

OK, I think that’s if for the night for me. Have any awesome travel plans that you want to share? Let me know and I’ll post them here! Until then, I’m going to head to dinner and I’ll see ya in the morning.

Best, Ryan
