The truth about the 2G glass coming off the digitizer being easy is a crock.
These guys are lying through their teeth. I have tried on numerous occasions to accomplish this feat using heat, razor blades, etc. always with the same results, the digitizer cracks or fails.
Yes you can pick the glass off but making the digitizer stick you have to have a touch sensitive adhesive made by 3M and probably others.
The digitizer has to work to use to, you have to apply so much heat that first you cannot handle the piece. so how do you do all the scraping and such. I call B--lsh-t to the whole deal. If you do one it wasn't worth it and if you did 2 you have maybe 6 hours in the 2. so whats the sense.

I have to say that Sean had a better ending with the 2G replacement than I did. Having changed the front glass on other cell phones when my boss at work dropped her 2G I took on the job of fixing it. I ordered the glass from eBay, and proceded to take the phone apart. I will have to dissagree with Ryan about damaging the cover, I was careful and had no problem there. But when I tried to seperate the glass from the digitizer I cracked the LCD screen. I wound up buying (out of my own pocket) the entire assembly and fixing it that way.....Lesson learned......I don't even attempt to fix a 2G anymore without quoting a price including the entire assembly.... I much prefer the way they built the 3G, it's no problem changing the glass/Digitizer. I'm also with Ryan in that I would never try and fix either phone with out the factory parts that come with the digitizer attached....

PS Ryan, you said in one of your blogs that if any of us had been able to fix the broken screens on these iPhones to send a resume, because you always need more techs.....Well, make me an offer and start sending me broken phones

Hello Ruicitio-

I can field this one- the digitizer is in between the LCD and the glass and covers the entire surface of the screen. The tricky part (and Sean said that he's done it!) is getting that digitizer removed without damage. Good luck!! Let me know how it came out!

Thanks, Ryan

Sean,

Hope you're still around, I could definitely use your help. On my 2g iphone, I removed all the shards of glass and had bought just the glass cover on ebay. Now, where exactly is the digitizer located on the phone? I can see the wiring for it but I'm wondering if it's just the top and bottom areas or was it something that covered the entire screen that was basically glued in between the glass and lcd?? Thanks for the help

Hello Sean, nice reply, thanks for the info. I stand corrected to my point #3 in my original post, I guess you're right. It IS possible to replace just the glass! Hopefully someone will try some plexiglass and blow me away on #4 too!!

We here at Mission Repair ONLY offer the factory-style installation on the original iPhone 2G (of the pre-glued glass, digitizer and LCD assembly) so we can offer a 1 year warranty on the repair. It's sealed, dust free and factory tested to withstand daily use.

But hey, if you're technically inclined to cut out the broken glass on your iPhone, Sean states that it can be done!

Congratulations on your fix, nice job. It sounds like you really had the technical mentality and "guts" to dig into your iPhone!

Take care, Ryan
